UCD DIET

HELP AVOID HIGH AMMONIA LEVELS WITH LOW-PROTEIN FOOD

Everyone’s needs are different, and the best way to manage your UCD might differ from someone else. That is why it’s important to talk to your doctor and come up with a personalised plan on how to manage your ammonia levels best. This plan includes having a good understanding of your diet and how much protein you can eat.

Food low in protein doesn’t have to mean less flavour. There are plenty dishes that are both healthy for you and tasty and there are lots of low protein recipes available online. Examples of foods that are low in protein include:

  • Fruits:
    Apples, pears, papaya, berries
  • Vegetables:
    Broccoli, peppers, asparagus, salad
  • Healthy fats:
Olive oil, avocados and coconut oil
  • Grains:
    Bread, pasta, oats, rice, barley

FOODS TO AVOID OR LIMIT

  • Meats like chicken, turkey, beef and pork
  • Fish and shellfish
  • Eggs
  • Legumes: including beans, peas and lentils
  • Dairy products: milk, cheese and yogurt
  • Soy products: tofu, tempeh and natto
  • Seeds: chia seeds, flaxseeds and hemp seeds

Remember!
Being stressed or getting sick, can increase ammonia to toxic levels even though you do your best to balance your intake of protein.
